Chem-Aqua > Legionella Risk Management

Legionella

Under certain environmental conditions, any water system could become a source for Legionella bacteria.

Share Tweet

Legionella bacteria can be found in natural freshwater environments, such as lakes, ponds and rivers; however, outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease are rarely caused by these sources. The main risk comes from purpose-built systems such as: cooling towers, hot and cold water systems and spa pools.

Outbreaks of the illness occur from exposure to Legionella growing in the water within these systems. Humidifiers, air washers, emergency showers and ornamental fountains also pose a risk for Legionella bacteria growth.

Chem-Aqua is a registered company with the UK Legionella Control Association (LCA) and can provide a full Legionella control programme to keep your facility safe and compliant.

How can Chem-Aqua help?

If your system has a water temperature between 20-45°C, stores/re-circulates water, is likely to contain a source of nutrients (sludge, scale or fouling) or spreads breathable droplets, e.g. aerosol, then your system is at risk of Legionella.

Our goal is to lead the fight against Legionella and provide best practices control measures in each country we operate. Our experience stems from the UK, which has for a long time been at the forefront in the fight against Legionella, leading the way in designing control measures to combat Legionnaires' disease.

We are now in a unique position for a multinational water treatment company to have trained experts embedded in many of the countries we operate in. We have experts in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy,  Spain, Portugal, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Turkey.

If your facility has systems at risk of Legionella, you have a duty of care to staff and visitors to ensure these systems comply with legislation. This includes:

  • Identifying and assessing sources of risk (risk assessment)
  • Preparing a scheme to prevent and control risk (control scheme)
  • Implementing, managing and monitoring control measures
  • Keeping records of the control measures and reviewing them regularly
  • Appointing a competent person with defined responsibilities

Chem-Aqua has extensive experience in the provision and implementation of Legionella control. Our state-of-the-art, patented technology combined with our expert services is here to help you. We provide:

  • Professional advice
  • Chemical and service provision – cooling systems
  • Analytical services: microbiological and chemical
  • Monitoring and control programs

Optimising Cycles to Minimise Water Usage

Optimising Cycles to Minimise Water Usage

Cycles of concentration (cycles) measure the degree to which dissolved impurities of makeup water are concentrated in a cooling tower or steam boiler system. Optimising the cycles is essential for su...
