What is paint made of?

Speak to our team
1

The Pigment

A solid substance that determines the colour of the paint.

2

The Binder

A natural or synthetic compound that affixes paint to a surface.

3

The Solvent

Blends the pigment and binder together to create liquid paint.

Banned use of DCM in paint removers

Historically the active ingredient in the most effective paint strippers was methylene chloride, also called dichloromethane (DCM). Methylene chloride has serious health risks including death and is likely a carcinogen. The EU banned the use of methylene chloride in paint strippers for consumers in 2012, although some markets allow their application by specially licensed users.

Solvent paint removers

Solvent based paint removers work by breaking the bond between the substrate and the paint. They work by swelling the paint and weakening the adhesion of the paint to the surface.

  • Solvent paint strippers are effective on any sort of finish
  • They do not damage the substrate
  • Particularly suited to industrial maintenance and repair
  • DCM banned in 2012
